NimbleMap works on your computer. Your maps and files stay there. This page lists everything that does leave your computer, and what we keep.

Who we are
NimbleMap (凌波微图) is made by Kangning Huang, an independent developer. For anything on this page, including deleting your data, write to [email protected].
Using the app without an account
You can open, style, analyse and export maps without signing in. Your files are read and drawn on your computer and are never uploaded. Place search uses a list of places built into the app, so what you type into it is not sent anywhere. There are no analytics, no tracking and no crash reporting in the app.
The app does contact these services, and each one sees your computer’s network (IP) address:
- Background map. The street basemap is read from Protomaps (build.protomaps.com) and the satellite basemap from NASA GIBS. These requests show which area and zoom level you are looking at. The offline basemap makes no requests.
- Update check. When the app opens, and when you choose Check for Updates…, it reads one small file from nimblemap.com (or its copy on GitCode). It sends only the app’s version number. Update Now downloads the new version from GitHub or GitCode.
- Feedback, only when you send it: see Help › Feedback for exactly what is posted publicly and what is kept privately.
View › Work Offline stops all of these.
Your account
An account is free and is needed only for NimbleMap Pro (the Ask box). You can sign in with Apple, Google, X, or an email code; there are no passwords. Accounts are run on Supabase, our hosting provider.
- What we keep: your email address, which sign-in method you used, an account ID, whether Pro is on, and when the account was created. Your sign-in provider may also pass your name and profile picture to Supabase; we don’t use them.
- Usage counts: for each day, how many questions you asked and how much text they used, so we can apply fair-use limits. Not the questions themselves. We keep these counts for up to 90 days.
- On your computer: your sign-in is kept in the macOS Keychain (Windows Credential Manager).
Deleting your account: Settings › Account › Delete Account deletes your account, your usage counts and any private feedback links at once. Our providers may keep server logs and backups for their own limited periods.
The Ask box (NimbleMap Pro)
When you ask a question, it goes through our server to an AI model (currently Anthropic’s Claude, reached through OpenRouter, which may route it to one of the companies that host that model). To answer, the model is sent:
- your question, and the earlier questions in the same conversation;
- the names of your open layers, their kind and number of objects, and their field names, types and units;
- any filter you have set, including its values; the object you have selected, with the values you are asking about; and, when your question names something (for example a city), up to five matching values from your data.
It is never sent your files, the shapes or coordinates of your data, file names or folders. Our server does not store your questions or the answers; it keeps only the daily counts above. OpenRouter and the model host handle the text under their own privacy policies.
Voice input uses Apple’s speech recognition: on your Mac when your language supports it, otherwise Apple’s speech service, under Apple’s terms. Nothing you say is sent to us.
The website
nimblemap.com has no analytics, no cookies, no ads and no third-party scripts. It is hosted on GitHub Pages behind Cloudflare, which see your IP address and keep standard access logs. Your light or dark theme choice is remembered in your browser only.
Sharing and selling
We don’t sell your data or use it for advertising. We share it only with the services named on this page, to run the app, or when the law requires it.
Your choices and rights
You can use the app without an account, work offline, and delete your account at any time. You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, by writing to [email protected]. If you live where data protection laws give you further rights (for example the EU, the UK or California), you have those rights too.
Children
NimbleMap accounts are not meant for children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). If you believe a child has made an account, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, we update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes are noted in the changelog.
